Warning: E-mails seek personal information

July 22, 2009

Credit Union Central of Canada (Canadian Central) has become aware that some individuals have received e-mails claiming to be from Canadian Central that attempt to fraudulently obtain personal information.

The e-mail, with the subject line Card Fraud Prevention Alert, appears to be from Canadian Central and urges the recipients to call the Canada Credit Union Fraud Prevention Security Department to discuss recent card activity. It includes a toll free number.  There is no such department at Canadian Central.

Canadian Central is a trade association that provides services to the credit union system. In fact, Canadian Central does not provide any services directly to individuals and has not sent such e-mails. The e-mails appear to be an attempt to obtain personal information that can be used fraudulently.

Anyone who receives such an e-mail is urged to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre -- PhoneBusters at:
